Communication and Emergency Response
Cell service is absent in many parks. Satellite messengers and personal locator beacons provide SOS capability where permitted. Know whether 911 routes to local dispatch. Park ranger contact numbers appear on maps. Response times may be hours in backcountry—self-rescue preparation is essential. Helicopter evacuations are reserved for life-threatening situations and depend on weather.
